Ten years ago my wife and I purchased a house built in the 1940s. During the remodeling, we discovered nice hard wood floors hidden underneath the carpet. They were in great shape with the exception of a few splotches of paint here and there. We tried a variety of ways to remove the paint, and this is what works the best. There are two ways to go about this: my preferred way of removing the paint is to soak a rag (paper towels work also) in alcohol and lay the rag on the paint splotch. Wait a few minutes and then pour more alcohol onto the rag. The key is to saturate the paint with the alcohol. The other method is basically the same, but without the rag. Just pour the alcohol over the splotch and let it soak in. In ideal situations the paint will come of very easily. More often than not you will need to take the plastic putty knife (metal ones can damage the floor) and gently scrape the paint away. Use the wire bristle brush on the more hard to remove splotches.
