How Do You Remove & Recoat Venetian Plaster?
Venetian plaster is often used to decorate walls and fireplaces. When the plaster begins to chip and flake, it must be repaired. The only way to repair Venetian plaster is to remove it or cover it and reapply the plaster from a smooth surface. Removing the plaster completely is the best option when the surface behind the plaster is not susceptible to damage, such as a brick wall, or when a new decorative treatment other than plaster is desired. Covering the Venetian plaster to create a smooth work surface is a better option when new Venetian plaster will be installed. Chip the plaster from the wall with a hammer and chisel, being careful not to damage the wall underneath. Peel the layers of plaster from the wall as they are loosened with the chisel. Apply a smooth coat of plaster with a trowel before attempting to reapply the Venetian plaster texture. Sand the Venetian plaster texture with medium-grit sandpaper until the surface is smooth.
