If you own an unsightly drum set, you might be interested in stripping the paint and lacquer from the drums to return them to their natural wooden finish. This process must be done carefully, however, in order to avoid disrupting the ply system of the drums. If you wear through a ply of the drum’s construction, or the drum itself, you could negatively affect the drum’s sound. Remove all of hardware from the drum. Your drum key will allow you to remove the top and bottom heads of the drum, as well as the hoops and tension rods. Next, remove the lugs located on the sides of the drum with a screwdriver. The lug screws will usually be located on the inside of Pearl drums. Keep all of the hardware in a designated location where it won’t be misplaced. Equip your ventilation mask to avoid breathing dust and fumes. Remove the lacquer finish from the drum shell with sandpaper. Prepare your rag by dampening it with paint thinner. Using fine-grit sandpaper, slowly rub at the finish of the drum. I
