When the tile in your shower becomes outdated, or tiles have cracked, it is time to remove it and start over. If you like to demolish things, then this job is for you. You do not need a professional tile setter to take out your old tile. Tile removal is a matter of getting the first few tiles out. As soon as the first few tiles are out, the rest are usually easier to remove. Pry the screw cover cap off of your faucet handle or handles in your shower. Place the flat tip of your screwdriver under the edge of the cap and pry up. Remove the retaining screw in the center of your handle or handles. Pull out on your handle to remove it from the stem valve. Grasp the escutcheon ring and turn it counter clockwise to remove it. Repeat this step on your other handle if you have one. Your escutcheon ring looks like a metal tube; it is used to cover your stem valve or valves. Remove the screws from the metal cover plate that is up against your shower wall and slide it off.
