Wood putty, sandpaper, galvanized nails and a little paint may be all you need to restore the beauty and protection to your home. Remove loose pieces of debris from the hole or scratch using a stiff brush. The surface area needs to be clean of dirt, spider webs and splinters in order to be receptive to patching compounds. Fill the hole or scratch with a layer of wood putty or caulk. Damaged areas that are deeper than 1/8 of an inch will need more than one layer applied.
