O.K., Rot at a chine level is a structural repair. If you are talking about the transom with a power boat - that is as structural as it gets! This might be a straight forward job but it will not be a simple job if done correctly. And if you are going to spend the money you may as well do it right the first time - much cheaper in the long run. If the rot is caused by rainwater sitting in the hull you should find ways of keeping the boat drained at all times in the future. If the rot is caused by not repairing damage asap - then the lesson is that delayed maintenance only gets dramatically more expensive with time. If your boat is worth very little in outright money terms, then you may need to consider the value in other ways, such as family connections or personal attachment even.
