Hardwood floors are generally durable, but they’re far from indestructible. If you drop a heavy object on the surface, or scrape something hard and heavy across it, you’ll likely find yourself dealing with a gouge in the wood. This should be repaired immediately, because the finish on top of the wood is what keeps moisture out and prevents rot from starting. An unrepaired gouge is like a chink in the floor’s armor. The repair process is simple: fill the gouge and re-top the area with protective gloss. Fold a piece of 100 grit sandpaper in to quarters. Use the edges of the paper to sand out the inside of the gouge. Get the whole damaged area clean and free any gloss, stain or splinters. Blow out the dust. Scoop up a little of your wood putty on your plastic putty knife. Press it into the gouge, making sure to get it fully embedded. Let it mound over the top a little. Allow it to set for 24 hours.
