How Do You Repair Lap Rotted Wood Siding?
Lap siding is a traditional wooden building material that protects a structure from weather damage. The individual siding boards are installed so that one siding board overlaps the top edge of the board beneath it. This overlapping pattern continues up the structure to create a cohesive, weather-resistant shell. Because the siding is exposed to the elements, over time it can rot. The idea of repairing rotted siding is a misnomer of sorts. Rotted siding boards must be removed from the structure and replaced with new material. Once a board is rotted, the integrity has been compromised and cannot be restored. Use a pry bar to lift the rotted siding boards from the structure. Pry the board up near to the nails, and lift it to a point where the nail shafts are exposed. Pull the nails out with a slate ripper, or cut the shanks with a hacksaw blade saw. The slate ripper is a handy tool that you can slide underneath the lifted siding board. It has a hook that you can use to grab the nail shaft
