Older top-loading washing machines may have a belt drive. If your washing machine won’t drain, agitate or spin, a faulty belt can be the culprit. In some models, you can access the belt drive simply by tipping the washing machine on its back. In others, you must remove some parts to get to the belt. Either way, you can repair or replace the belt yourself, without having to pay a service technician to do it for you. Adjust the drive-belt tension before replacing the belt entirely. Open the rear access panel to begin. Loosen the mounting bolt above the motor with a wrench. Move the motor until it deflects 1/2 inch when it is pushed in with a rubber mallet. Retighten the bolt. Unplug your washing machine, turn off the water supply and remove the inlet hoses. Loosen the tension as above. Carefully place the washing machine on its back.
