Lap siding is a common cladding to many homes and can be made from many materials, including wood, pressed fiberboard and cement. When in good repair, lap siding not only looks good but protects your home from wind and water. However, siding that has been damaged may allow the elements to penetrate the sheathing underneath and cause further damage. Lap siding that is damaged from rot, splitting or other defects can be replaced in one day with normal carpentry tools. Locate a replacement piece of lap siding that matches the siding on your home at a building supply center. Carefully drive small wood wedges with a hammer underneath the siding above the piece you are replacing to raise it up and completely reveal the damaged piece underneath. Remove the nails from the bottom edge of the raised piece with a claw hammer. Mark the area on the siding that needs replaced with a pencil and framing square.
