How Do You Replace a Toyota Avalons Transmission Speed Sensor?

1

The transmission speed sensor (also called a vehicle speed sensor) in your Toyota Avalon supplies a signal to the vehicle’s computer; the signal allows the computer to drive the speedometer, as well as to perform various other functions related to engine load and torque converter clutch lock-up. When the sensor fails, the speedometer stops functioning and the “Check engine” light comes on, warning you of the sensor failure. Replacement is a straight-forward process and should only take an hour or two. Remove the battery located in the right front of the engine compartment on the Avalon: Remove the negative battery cable, using an 8-mm wrench to loosen the cable bolt, then remove the positive battery cable in the same manner. Remove the battery hold-down bolts using a 10-mm socket, ratchet and long extension. Lift the battery from the engine compartment and set it aside. Unplug the three wire connector from the speed sensor by lifting the locking tab on the connector as you pull it up.
