How Do You Replace A Wall Light Switch?

0

When you install a new bulb in a ceiling light and the light still doesn’t go on, chances are the switch needs to be replaced. Here’s how to replace a wall switch. Before you head to the hardware store, check which kind of switch you need, a one-switch or multiple-switch style. Turn off the power to the circuit you’ll be working on. Unscrew the faceplate from the wall switch box. Remove the mounting screws of the switch and pull it out of the wall box. Loosen the terminal screws and detach the wires of the old switch. Connect a new switch to the wires-black wire to brass-colored screw, white wire to silver-colored screw. Screw the mounting screws back into place. Wrap electrical tape around the sides, top and bottom of the switch. This will make removal easier in the future. Install weather stripping if the switch is on an outside wall to insulate it from cold air. Replace faceplate. Turn on power to the circuit and test the light.
