Plug the circuit tester in to the outlet to ensure that the circuit has no power. Remove the faceplate of the switch with the screwdriver. Touch the probes of the circuit tester to the terminals on both sides of the switch. If the tester indicates that no power is coming to the switch, it is safe to proceed. Remove the outlet faceplate.
