Switches and outlets sometimes wear out and need replacement. When it is a switch and outlet combination, it may be difficult to determine which of the devices is not working properly. Check the breaker switch to see if it has tripped and may be the cause of the difficulty. Replacing an outlet and switch is a fairly easy task. All that you will need for the job are a few basic tools. Turn the power off to the circuit by flipping the breaker switch to the “Off” position. Put on the safety glasses or goggles. Plug the circuit tester in to the outlet to ensure that the circuit has no power. Remove the faceplate of the switch with the screwdriver. Touch the probes of the circuit tester to the terminals on both sides of the switch. If the tester indicates that no power is coming to the switch, it is safe to proceed. Remove the outlet faceplate.
