Once the power is successfully turned off you can work on your project with out the fear of being electrocuted. Remove the light globe from the light fixture and then remove the fixture from the electrical box. Most fixtures are mounted with two screws directly into the electrical box. Once the fixture is removed from the electrical box you will need to remove the electrical connections. The fixture should have three wires that come from it, black (hot), white (neutral or common) and green (ground). These wires should correspond to the same color wires in the electrical box but due to different types of circut layouts the wiring may be different.
