These mowers are keepers. But doing the brush spring modification is the key to strong, consistent running. Remove the plastic motor cover by loosening the hold-down screw. There is no need to do more than just loosen the screw. Then slide up the rear of the cover and pop out the clips on the front of the cover. Remove the screw holding down the first armature brush. Slip the rear of the brush holder upward to remove the brush from the motor. Use care to prevent the spring or brush from zingging and flying. Stretch the spring out to about 3 inches. Reinsert the brush and spring back into the housing by pressing the end of the brush against the commutator of the motor and then reinserting the holder back into its lot in the motor assembly. Reinsert the brush hold-down screw. Though installing a new brush is best or maybe even necessary, if the brush is at least 1/2 inch long, it might be sufficient to scrape away the carbon from the end.
