“Crud” is thick, chunky, sticky hunks of snow that can be difficult to adjust to, but is also pretty fun to snowboard in once you get the hang of it. Learn to love crud. Keep up your speed as you approach cruddy snow. Lean back and try to ride high on the crud. Sinking below the crud’s hard shell can be rough on your shins and makes turning difficult. Jump up a little extra on your turns in crud, to make sure your board breaks free from the shell. Pull your knees up as you jump. Push back into the snow after you turn to re-engage your rail on the hard surface of the crud. Keep your knees bent and legs ready to flex or extend to absorb any ruts or bumps in the crud.
