Contrary to popular belief Mexico City street taxis are not that dangerous especially if you know how to take them. Hotel and Radio taxis capitalize on your fears by swearing they are safer, but the amount they charge is equivalent to robbing you blind anyway. Make sure the taxi looks official. If the cab looks dirty and in poor condition, pass on taking it. Notice the windows. If any window besides the driver's is open do not take the cab. Open windows allow robbers easy access. Check the driver's ID. The driver's ID should be attached to his/her driver's side visor. Match the face to the ID. Most drivers are more than willing to show it. Get in a taxi that someone else is exiting. If someone else made the trip safely then the chances are you will too. There are enough people taking taxis to always use this strategy.
