Hardy perennial geraniums are often grown from seed, as many nurseries prefer to carry the less hardy annual bedding varieties. Instead of purchasing new seed each year, saving your seeds allows you to grow as many geranium plants as you desire for no cost. Save seeds from your healthiest and most attractive plants, as the seeds will likely have these same attributes. Save at least twice as many seeds as you will need in spring, so if they don’t all germinate or grow into successful plants you still have enough. Allow the geranium flowers to to wilt and the petals to start falling away. Watch for the formation of five seeds at the base of the of the petals. Snip off the flower head with a pair of sharp scissors once the seeds darken in color—usually to a dark brown but some varieties only mature to a light brown. Bring the seed head indoors.
