How Do You Seal A Shower Pan Before Tiling?
Tiling a shower floor isn’t just a matter of setting tiles over underlayment. You have to construct a properly sealed cement-and-liner base, called a “shower pan,” before you tile. The shower pan is basically a plastic liner sandwiched between two layers of sloped concrete. It’s designed to catch any water that gets through the tile and grout, and divert that water into special “weep holes” in the sides of your drain unit under the surface. This is a big job that shouldn’t be attempted without some previous carpentry practice. Measure your shower floor and cut your cement board to size, using your jigsaw. Cut a hole in the center of the board to accommodate the drain. Spread down thinset mortar with a notched trowel. Press your cement board into place. Use your screwgun to sink drywall screws every foot. Use your tinsnips to cut your cement mesh to size to fit on the shower floor. Snip out a hole for the center drain.
