In response to the murder of 7-year-old Megan Kafka by a paroled sex offender, a majority of states have passed a series of regulations collectively known as Megan’s Law. The laws vary from state to state, but generally involve the creation of a publicly searchable sex offender registry, allowing the public to access information on the whereabouts of known sex offenders. What information you can access varies from state to state, but the U.S. government has put together one database that will search the information available from each state. Go to the United States Department of Justice National Sex Offender Public website. Read and agree to the terms of use listed on the website. This is required before you can access the database. It contains disclaimers about the accuracy of the information as well as links to each jurisdiction’s terms and conditions of use.
