How Do You See A Whale At Point Reyes National Seashore?
We may think of whale-watching as a pursuit that requires a boat trip, maybe an expensive one. However, some of the best whale-watching on the Pacific Coast can be done from the shore, more or less for free. The place to go to enjoy this opportunity is Point Reyes National Seashore. California gray whales live part of the year in the water off Alaska and part of the year off Baja California, and their migration takes them directly past the headland at Point Reyes. From the point, you can get a good look at them, with a little luck. Go to the Point Reyes Peninsula. No matter which way you enter the peninsula, you will find yourself on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, the main road through Point Reyes National Seashore. Take it nearly to the end of the road, to the turnoff for Drakes Beach. Turn left at the road to Drakes Beach, if you arrive during the peak migration months of, roughly, December through March.
