How Do You See Bats In Texas And Southern Habitats?
Bats are fascinating creatures, and they keep our ecosystem in balance by eating huge numbers of mosquitoes and moths, and actually pollinating flowers. The Mexican free-tailed bat (Tadarida brasiliensis) spends summers in Texas, and can be seen in downtown Austin in the evenings. Of course they are also in other southern cities in the United States, since they live in southern states from March to September. There are more of them in Austin than other urban areas, and they have a celebration for them every year. Make plans to see the bats on August 22, when the Austin Batfest gets underway this year. This festival has live music, food, arts and crafts, and other vendors set up to assist in entertainment. It begins about 1 p.m., but the bats do not show until dusk or sunset.
