How do you service a 2005 chevy silverado transmission?

Servicing the transmission at home consists of dropping the trans pan and changing the filter within, replacing the pan with a new gasket (some gaskets are reusable) and refilling the trans with about 4 to 5 qts of fluid. Transmission service kits are availible from your local auto parts store, they consist of a gasket and filter and sometimes a new seal for the filter. There may or not be a drain plug on your trans, it depends on which type of trans you have, so if you don’t have a drain plug you need a large enough pan to catch all the fluid as you unbolt the pan from the trans. The only drawback with doing this at home is that you only drain aprox half of the trans fluid. The transmission probably holds somewhere around 10 to 12 qts of fluid and you only drain 4 to 5 when you drop the pan. If you want to totally flush out the system you need to take it to a shop that has the equipment to do so.
