Clay tile, properly fired, creates a firm, solid material that makes for a durable outdoor building substance. Specially made clay tiles that are treated to be slip-resistant can be used for anything from patio’s to pathways. Installation of the tiles is possible by just about anyone who follows a few short steps. Prepare the surface where you’ll be installing the tiles. For outdoor installation you should use a dry, level concrete surface. Clean the concrete thoroughly, removing any dirt or debris with a broom and wire brush. Check the surface to see that its level by using a straight edge. A straight edge is a long level bar with a flat edge that you can drag along the surface of the concrete and find any dips or rises in the surface. If you find changes in the surface that are greater than 1/8 inch, you’ll need to use a self-leveling compound to create a level concrete surface.
