Shingle sidewall siding is a reasonably easy way to provide an attractive natural finish to exterior wall surfaces. Careful preparation is needed for shingle application to existing wall surfaces. Shingles can be applied over a variety of surfaces but are most frequently applied over wood siding of many kinds. The sidewall shingling process is quite simple. The exterior surface of the building must be prepared, cleaned, smoothed and free of protruding nails. An existing older wood surface should be checked and if necessary treated for dry rot termites or other problems. An alternative is to remove the existing exterior cladding down to the studs and clean and prepare that surface. The exterior is then wrapped with the bituminous waterproof siding paper, which is overlapped at all vertical and horizontal joints, and caulked and flashed as necessary at corners and openings such as windows and doors.
