Steamed vegetables are as healthy a dish as you will find. However, if you’ve never tried this method, and don’t own a steamer, or had one and something happened to it, do not despair! It’s easy to steam without a conventional steamer, with items you most likely already have on hand! Wash the vegetables and cut them into about the same size pieces so they will cook at about the same rate. You can use all the same vegetable, such as all carrots or all cabbage, but I like to mix them because they’re prettier that way and they taste good. Put them on the plate or in the bowl. Set them aside while you prepare the “steamer” apparatus. After thoroughly washing the can and removing the label, if any, cut the bottom from the can, so that it becomes a cylinder. Place it in the bottom of the pot, upright, standing on end. This will support the plate of vegetables in the steam.
