How Do You Sterilize A Clarinet Mouthpiece?

0

There is no single way to sterilize a mouthpiece. Performers and educators generally use an approach that involves soaking the mouthpiece in a solvent. These solvents can include rubbing alcohol, household vinegar, freshly squeezed lemon juice, hydrogen peroxide, mouthwash and commercial products like Mi-T-Mist Mouthpiece Cleanser, Betadine or Sterisol. The main concerns are keeping the cork dry and avoiding discoloration of especially prized mouthpieces. Of all methods, the easiest is to use a spray on the mouthpiece and allow it to dry. Lay out a clean piece of paper towel after playing the clarinet. Remove the mouthpiece and put it on the paper towel. Lay a tissue over the cork to keep it dry. Spray disinfectant on the mouthpiece. Wait a minute or so while the spray evaporates. Store the mouthpiece carefully in the clarinet case.
