How Do You Take Care Of A Hyacinthus Plant?

0

The hyacinth (Hyacinthus orientalis), is one of the best loved of spring bulbs. Available in a wide range of colors including white, yellow, pink, blue and purple, hyacinths are prized by gardeners for their strong, pleasing fragrance. They are easily grown outdoors and can also be forced (specially conditioned) to bloom indoors during the winter months. Plant them in a sunny garden spot outside. Plant bulbs outdoors in the fall, six to eight weeks before the first hard frost. The soil should be well-drained and dirt loosened to a depth of 12 to 15 inches, with a liberal amount of compost or peat moss mixed in. Dig holes six to eight inches deep, spaced from two to six inches apart. Place the bulbs in the holes with the bottom (flat) side down and cover with soil, tamped down firmly. After planting, keep the bulbs well-watered. In areas with severe winters, protect the bulbs with a heavy layer of mulch until spring. Keep the plants well-watered when they begin to sprout in the spring.
