How Do You Tell The Difference Between A Male & Female Box Turtle?
Determining the sex of your box turtle can be helpful if you just got your pet and you want to know what to name it. If you’re looking into breeding box turtles, you need to be sure you’ve got a suitable pair. A box turtle’s sex organs are inside its shell, so it can be difficult to determine if yours is male or female. However, sexing your box turtle can be done using other visible characteristics. Analyze your box turtle’s overall coloration. A male turtle will usually be more colorful, especially on the head, neck and legs. If your turtle has the colors red, white, black, green or orange prominently displayed on it, it is likely a boy. Look at your turtle’s eyes. The eyes of a male are generally reddish, whereas a female’s are deep brown. Check out the top of your turtle’s head. A male box turtle will have a reddish-toned head and a female will have a brown one. Look at the plastron, or underside, of your box turtle’s shell.
