How do you tell the difference between koi and golfish babies.?
Koi and goldfish can interbreed resulting in a wide range of mixed characteristics. If you have butterfly koi in your pond, even sorting by fin length is not going to be easy. Some strains of koi have large scales not found on goldfish so you can pick those out when you see them. Most people keep an assortment of koi together and when these fish breed together, very few of the babies will have good color. Even when breeding the highest quality parents from the same strain, only a very small percentage of the babies will be as high quality as their parents. You don’t mention how many babies you have but I would suggest that you keep as many as you can simply because you raised them. If you can’t keep them indoors over the winter, you can reintroduce them to the main pond and some will survive until next year when you might spot some keepers.
