How do you tell the difference between male and female young turkeys?
Some veterinarians and bird breeders are able to sex young birds by examining the vent area but that is not always accurate. You pretty much have to wait until they get older and the male turkey trademerks start showing up (ie: bristles/whiskers in the chest area, a larger snood (flap of skin over nose), smallish spur at base of leg, and of course if they start to gobble that’s a pretty sure sign 🙂 If you aren’t noticing some fairly obvious differences between them by now or if one isn’t significantly larger than the other then you may have two males or two females. Turkeys make interesting pets 🙂 Have fun! (Also, keep in mind that male turkeys can become aggresive when they reach maturity and, if so, can peck pretty hard.
