Testing the ignition coil on your 1993 Jeep Cherokee will help you diagnose some engine problems with your Jeep. The coils are mounted low on the passenger's side on the 4.0 liter engine, the most common engine in these trucks, and can be accessed relatively easily. Testing the coil is not unlike testing a coil on any vehicle, but you will need a multimeter to perform the test. If you do not have a multimeter, you can get one at an auto parts store or home improvement center. Remove the negative battery cable connector from the negative battery terminal, using a wrench to loosen the retaining bolt. Lift the connector off the terminal and set it aside so that it cannot come in contact with the battery while you work. Locate the coil on the passenger's side of the engine.
