When you are having issues with your hot water temperature, it may be time to learn how to test the thermostat on a hot water heater. Two thermostats are usually inside your water heater. The lower thermostat heats your water as it fills the tank while the upper thermostat works as a backup to make sure the water stays at a desired temperature. Turn the hot water heater circuit breaker off in the home electrical panel box. Remove the screws that secure the access panel to the water heater with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Two access panels are on the water heater. One is for the upper thermostat and heating element, and the other is for the lower heating element and thermostat. Remove the access panel, and move away any insulation blocking the view of the thermostat and heating element. Locate the thermostat inside the panel.
