Remove carpet if necessary. Find access under the newel post. If the newel post is overhead this will require you going through the floor, using care when on a ladder. If it is on the staircase, you may need to remove the outside covering to get access to under the stairs. Install a 16-inch lag bolt into the newel post. Make sure it punctures the newel post in its center. You may need to use a hammer to get it started. Verify the post is secure and no longer loose.
