Creating a new look for a room can be as simple as making a few changes. Updating a marble fireplace mantel is a straightforward process that requires one extra step or the tile won't stick to the smooth surface of the marble. This technique is the same as any many tile projects and can be completed by a novice in an afternoon. Rough sand the marble with a belt sander or 30 grit sandpaper. Wipe down the surface or use a hand vacuum to remove marble dust. Complete a practice run by laying out the ceramic tile in the pattern you'll use. Make sure you have enough tile. Remember to leave space between the tiles for grout. Use a spacer to get an idea of how big a space to leave.
