How Do You Treat Bumblefoot In Guinea Pigs?

0

• Know the symptoms of bumblefoot so you can treat it. The full list can be found at this GuineaLynx article, but common symptoms include: • Swelling, redness and/or bleeding of a guinea pig’s foot and/or toes. You may first notice spots of blood in or on the bedding. • Limping. • Consult a vet. Guinea pigs with bumblefoot need immediate veterinary attention. • Make the cage floor softer. Do not use a cage with a wire floor, in whole or in part — this is a major cause of bumblefoot. • Administer any medication or treatment prescribed by the vet. Bumblefoot is often treated with antibiotics and soaking the feet in a medical solution. • Make sure that the cage is kept especially clean when the guinea pig has sores. This will reduce the risk of worsening the infection. • Observe the guinea pig for improvement or deterioration. If it is getting worse, or the redness, swelling or ulceration is spreading, go back to the vet. Conduct any follow up visits with your vet.
