Mange, also known as demodex, is a microscopic mite that causes skin irritation in animals and humans. There are different species of demodex that affect different animals. Demodex canis affects dogs and has three varieties that can affect them. Mange is not inherited but passed by contact from one being to another. Irritation, swelling, hair loss, and redness of the affected area are all signs of mange. Diagnose the strain of mange that is affecting the puppy. There are three types of mange. They are demodectic mange, cheyletiella mange, and sarcoptic mange. The treatment necessary will depend on the type mange on the puppy. The veterinarian will preform a biopsy or skin scraping to test the mange and establish a treatment. Apply treatment cream or gel to the affected area. Place rubber gloves on your hands and in a well ventilated room apply the cream to the affected areas on the puppy.
