Fancy pet rats that are bought from large pet stores can often be a little unhealthy. It’s best to just never buy these pet rats at all, but if you’ve already found yourself with a sick rat, it’s good to know how to provide proper fancy pet rat care. Lice and fleas are the most common external problem a rat will come home with. Examine the fur. If you see little black or yellow dots crawling across the fur, this is fleas. If you see tiny silver beads clinging to the tips of the rat’s fur (more easily spotted on dark fur) this is the nits of lice. Both are treated in the same fashion, but it’s important to diagnose that these are the problems. Purchase Ivermectin. It’s an ingredient in horse medications and can be found under the generic name Bimectin or sometimes just Ivermectin. It can also be found in a brand name form, but generic and brand name are the same. It can be found in most feed stores, but call to be sure they have it before you make the trip.
