Kiwi have aggressive growth rates of up to 15 to 20 feet in one season and can produce up to 300 lbs. of fruit a year. Proper pruning and training of kiwi vines is integral to managing the growth rate and ensuring a good harvest. Kiwi vines require a support structure such as another plant or a trellis. Winter pruning should take place during the last week of January or the first week of February. Summer pruning should take place after flowering. Left on their own in the wild, kiwi vines can grow up to 100 feet into the trees. In your home garden, this can easily overtake your patio if left untrimmed.
