A carburetor is a multi-faceted engine control device. Having such a range of responsibilities, a maladjusted carburetor can effect the engine performance to a degree that can cause a wide variety of driving problems. Some of these problems include, but are not limited to, rough idle, poor fuel economy, fouling of the plugs, detonation in the cylinders, lack of power and bogging on initial acceleration. These are just a few of the results associated to an improperly adjusted or maintained carburetor. Remove the air cleaner. Check the choke operation by pushing the throttle linkage open slightly by hand and allowing the linkage to return to the closed position. The choke plate should be totally closed and the throttle linkage should be slightly above the idle adjustment screw. When the engine is started, the vacuum choke pull-down on the passenger side of the carburetor should pull the choke open just enough to allow the engine to run.
