To troubleshoot engine components requires an understanding of basic mechanical and electrical theory. Precautions will need to be taken as this task requires the battery to remain connected while testing is performed. The procedures required for performing this repair produce results that are best understood by an experienced mechanic. This is not to say, however, that a good weekend mechanic would not be able to complete the task and master the skills needed through the process of trial and error. Put on the safety glasses. Place the negative lead from the voltmeter on the negative battery terminal, and the positive lead on the positive battery terminal with the engine not running. Read the meter’s voltage readout. Replace the battery with a new one if it does not pass the test for a full charge of 12 volts. Unplug the spark plug wire and remove the spark plug using the spark plug wrench. Place the spark plug wire in a manner where its bare end is insulated and not touching anything
