One of the easiest ways to turn a bathtub into a shower is to install a hand held shower system instead of busting out a wall and putting in new plumbing. Either way requires making sure the walls surrounding the tub are waterproof and the tub well-sealed around the seams. Decide how you want to install the shower. A hand held shower requires no busting of walls, just installation on a waterproof tub/shower wall. Install the new plumbing and a shower nozzle if not choosing the hand shower. This requires taking out the wall above the tub faucet, installing new piping to the shower, and attaching the shower without the head. Reinforce the shower walls if necessary to support the newer, heavier wall system. Prior water damage may have weakened the surrounding structure. Waterproof the three sides of the bathtub, if required, by installing a tub surround or getting more decorative with tile and grout. Recaulk around the tub seams and any new seams.
