This will expose a tube that connects down to drain and is there to drain excess water from tub even when plug is in drain. Wet a wash cloth and use it to plug the overflow tube by stuffing it in. By wetting the wash cloth you will obtain a more air tight seal. Don’t get carried away and push it in too deeply as you will want to remove it later. You will want 3-4 inches of water in tub, apply plunger to drain and pump vigorously. If you do this without plugging overflow drain you will only push water up overflow tube and not apply any pressure to the clog.
