Open the user interface in > programs / avg free 8.5 / avg free user interface. Or there may be a shortcut to it on your desktop. Click on the update now button. This will download the current virus definitions that the vendor discovers in the wild. You will see the database update dialogue box pop up, select Update. Your computer will now install these updates and will merge them with the existing databse. Next you will see the progress of the download.
