How Do You Use A Hypo Wrap To Treat Hypothermia?
• Lay a plastic tarp or emergency blanket on the ground. This will provide an insulating layer between the ground and the rest of the wrap. • Place 1 or 2 foam mats on top of the tarp. Use blankets or a sleeping bag if you do not have mats to form this layer of the hypothermia wrap. • Add three sleeping bags to the stack. Dress the victim in dry clothes if needed. It is important the person is as dry as possible so that extra dampness doesn’t wick away more heat. • Open the middle bag and carefully lay the victim inside. Place hot water bottles or chemical heating pads against the person’s clothing at the armpits and groin area. • Zip up this bag and lay the last sleeping bag on top of the person. The last bag should remain zipped when placed on top of the middle sleeping bag. • Cover the person’s head with a hat, scarf or small blanket to help retain heat.
