According to the Gemological Institute of America’s Essential Colored Stone Reference Guide, ultrasonic cleaning is safe for corundum stones including sapphires and rubies, as long as the stones are not weakened by fracture or have been cavity-filled to make a smooth stone surface. Fill your ultrasonic cleaning unit to the interior fill line with either a commercial jewelry cleaning liquid or with warm water and 2 to 5 drops of a mild dish liquid detergent. Place the sapphire stones or jewelry into the agitation basket and lower into the cleaning solution, or simply place gently in the bottom of the ultrasonic unit. Close the lid snugly, and turn the power switch on to begin the agitation activity of the unit.
