Effigy Mounds National Monument preserves prehistoric Indian burial mounds that are unique in type to North America. Located in northeastern Iowa, the area contains over 200 known burial mounds, including 29 in the shape of bear or bird effigies. The Great Bear Mound is 137 feet long and 31 and 1/2 feet high.
