How Do You Visit Effigy Mounds National Monument?
Effigy Mounds National Monument preserves prehistoric Indian burial mounds that are unique in type to North America. Located in northeastern Iowa, the area contains over 200 known burial mounds, including 29 in the shape of bear or bird effigies. The Great Bear Mound is 137 feet long and 31 and 1/2 feet high. Read on to learn more. Start at the visitor center to see the exhibits and see an audiovisual presentation about the history of the area and the Effigy Mounds. The center is open every day, except for Christmas. The information you can find here will help you appreciate the rest of the national monument more. Take the one hour walk on the self guided Fire Point Trail. Exhibits and markers along the way will tell you about the mounds and other interesting features of the landscape.
