There are dozens of additives, vitamins and fertilizers that are recommended for watering your plants. Many of these contain chemicals that may do more harm than good and some can be harmful to you or your children and pets, even if they are good for the plants. Sugar is an inexpensive and nontoxic alternative to many of these additives. Since plants make and break down sugar as part of osmosis, adding sugar to your plants' water can help them thrive. Be careful, though. Too much sugar could cause the plants to absorb water improperly and thus wilt and die. Examine your plants. Plants that like wet feet, established plants and wilted plants will benefit the most from watering with sugar. Sugar added to water for new plants may kill them from lack of water. Mix about a tablespoon of sugar into a quart of warm water. Allow the water to come to room temperature and water your plants as usual.
