When boating season is over, it’s time to winterize your outboard engine before storing it away for the winter. By taking steps now, you will prevent damage to the engine If you operate your boat in saltwater, it’s imperative that you winterize your engine as soon as possible after the last seasonal usage. For all other boats, winterize the outboard engine within a few weeks of the last use. Brace the outboard engine on an engine lift or use two sturdy sawhorses and some lumber and make a stand to hold it securely. Make sure there is an open area beneath the engine to drain the fluids. Remove the spark plug. Clean the engine, inside and out. Use the appropriate socket to loosen the drain plug nut on the bottom of the engine and allow any remaining fuel to drain into a bucket. Insert the garden hose and allow the water to run through until it comes out clean. Allow all the water to drain out before replacing the plug.
