How Do You Wire A Ceiling Fan With Separate Controls?

Ceiling fans are more convenient when they are controlled by wall switches. In large rooms with more than one entryway, more than one switch may be required. This configuration–called a three-way switch because of the three terminals on the switches–is no more difficult to wire than a single switch control. Starting from scratch by installing the fan and wiring the switches is an afternoon project that most do-it-yourselfers can tackle with ease. Find a branch circuit in the room to use as a power source. You’ll tap into the circuit through a wall receptacle. The easiest way to do this is if the wiring for one of the switches is directly above the receptacle. Otherwise, remove the baseboards between the source receptacle and Switch 1 for running the electric cable, cutting small access holes at the base of the wall. Make the cuts for the fan and switches. The fan hole should be at least 6 inches in diameter to allow you to work with the brace bar supporting the fan. Cut small access
